Chattanooga sits in a river valley ringed by Lookout Mountain, Signal Mountain, and Missionary Ridge, and a sloped lot means a lot of houses here have a daylight or walkout basement instead of a slab.
Basement insulation in Chattanooga, TN, is what decides whether that lower level is usable square footage or the room nobody goes into. Anthem Insulation & Home has been doing this work as part of our insulation services in Chattanooga, TN, for more than ten years.
A below-grade wall stays close to ground temperature year round, somewhere in the low sixties through a Tennessee summer. Outdoor air in July carries a dew point in the low seventies. Push that air against a wall that’s ten degrees cooler and water comes out of it, which is why a basement can feel clammy in August without a single drop of water coming through the foundation.
Bulk water is a separate problem and has to be solved before any insulation goes in. If there’s staining at the base of the wall or efflorescence on the block, the grading, gutters, or drainage needs attention first. Insulating over an active leak buries it.
Closed-cell spray foam applied directly to the foundation wall is the approach we recommend most. It sticks to concrete and block, it’s an air barrier and a vapor retarder in the same pass, and it keeps the interior surface warm enough that condensation never gets a chance to form. Our spray foam insulation crews handle those installs.
Rigid foam board is the other route, mechanically fastened to the wall with seams taped, and it works well on a wall that’s flat and in good shape. Older block and stone foundations in North Shore and St. Elmo are rarely flat enough for board to sit tight, and foam sprayed in place follows the irregularities instead of bridging them.
Fiberglass insulation has a place down here, but not against the concrete. Batts pressed straight onto a foundation wall let humid air pass through to the cold surface, and the batt ends up wet. Fiberglass belongs in a stud wall built inboard of a continuous layer of foam, not as the first line against masonry.
The rim joist is the leakiest part of most basements, and it’s a small area to treat. Closed-cell foam in each bay seals the gap between the foundation and the framing above it, which is usually worth doing even on a project where the walls are staying as they are.
When a finished basement is the goal, the order matters. Foam goes on the wall first, then the stud wall goes up an inch or so off the masonry, then batts fill the cavity if more R-value is needed. Skipping the foam and framing straight against the wall is the most common mistake we’re called in to fix.
One thing to avoid is a polyethylene sheet on the interior face. In this climate it traps moisture in the assembly rather than keeping it out – the right material choice matters just as much when the goal is soundproofing a finished basement rather than just managing temperature.
Hamilton County falls in climate zone 4, where basement walls call for R-10 continuous or R-13 in a framed cavity. Closed-cell foam gets to R-10 in about an inch and a half, which leaves headroom and ceiling height intact in a basement that doesn’t have much to spare.

Treating your home like our own is the standard we hold crews to. In a basement that means protecting whatever is stored down there, keeping the stairs clean, and telling you when the rim joists alone would get you most of the benefit.

Sawyer and his team did an exceptional job with our blown insulation project. Our project was unique as the team had no access to the attic and had to work through speaker holes and can light holes. The team was respectful of all of our belongings, laying down tarps and plastic. The team was patient and happy to work with all my pickiness and oversight. Definitely recommend Anthem Insulation for your home or business.
I had a great experience working with them. The price they quoted was lower than I was expecting. They were not pushy, even though it took me 3 months to get around to scheduling the work after the estimate. The spray insulation work was high quality, and looks great.
I was unexpectedly not able to be home when they showed up to do the work so I left the door unlocked and the check on the counter. They were super professional, and took care of everything without me needing to be there. Couldn’t ask for anything more, I’d definitely recommend this place.
