An attached garage sits outside the conditioned part of the house. The assemblies that change your comfort and your power bill are the wall shared with the living space, the ceiling under any room above, and the door between the garage and the house. Insulating the exterior garage walls does little for the house itself unless you intend to heat or cool the garage.
Sealing that common wall does more than hold temperature. Exhaust, solvent vapor, and whatever is stored on the shelves move through gaps around outlets, the door frame, and the top plate. Closing those paths keeps garage air in the garage.
The overhead door is the largest single opening in the assembly. An uninsulated steel door will cap what any of this work accomplishes in a garage you’re trying to condition, and that’s a door question rather than an insulation one.
The floor of a bonus room over a garage has outside temperature on its underside, which is why it behaves nothing like the rest of the second story. In most of the homes we open up, the original batts have sagged out of the joist bays or were never held tight to the subfloor, leaving an air gap that undoes most of the R-value on paper.
The fix is contact. Batts have to fill the bay and touch the subfloor, held with support wire rather than friction alone. Foam sprayed to the underside of the subfloor does the same thing and stays there. The band joist at the perimeter gets sealed at the same time, since that’s where outside air enters the floor cavity.
Fiberglass batts do the job in garage walls and ceilings where they can be secured and covered. Mineral wool is the better call under a bedroom, since it adds fire resistance and cuts the noise of a garage door opening at six in the morning.
Closed-cell spray foam insulation is what we use on garage ceilings and rim areas where air sealing and R-value both matter in a shallow cavity. Foam in a garage has to be covered with an approved thermal barrier rather than left exposed, so plan on drywall over it.
