The facing itself is not just there for structure or handling convenience. It serves a functional purpose: it helps prevent condensation from forming inside your wall cavities, which can lead to mold, rot, and reduced insulation performance over time.

When to Use Faced Insulation

Faced insulation is typically the right choice in these situations:

  • Exterior walls where you need a moisture barrier between the conditioned interior and the outdoor environment
  • Floors above unconditioned spaces such as a garage or crawl space
  • Basement walls in some climates where moisture control is a priority
  • First-time insulation installations in wall cavities that have never been insulated before

When installing faced insulation, the facing should always be oriented toward the warm-in-winter side of the wall. In most Georgia homes, that means facing the living space interior.

A Note on Kraft Paper vs. Foil Facing

Kraft paper facing is the most common type and works well in standard residential applications. Foil facing provides a higher vapor resistance and is often used in crawl spaces, basements, or areas with higher moisture exposure. Unfaced insulation is generally the better choice in these situations:

  • Adding insulation on top of existing insulation in an attic, sometimes called a top-off
  • Interior walls between two conditioned spaces where moisture control is not a concern
  • Attic floors where the vapor barrier is already part of the subfloor or ceiling assembly below
  • Situations where two layers of faced insulation would trap moisture between them, creating a risk of condensation and mold

In most attic applications, unfaced batts or blown-in insulation are the standard recommendation precisely because the attic needs to breathe. Adding faced insulation in an attic that already has a vapor barrier in place can trap moisture and create more problems than it solves.

How R-Value Fits Into the Conversation

Whether you choose faced or unfaced insulation, R-value remains the measure of thermal performance. R-value measures how well insulation resists heat flow. The higher the R-value, the better the insulation performs.

The facing itself does not contribute meaningfully to R-value. A faced R-19 batt and an unfaced R-19 batt perform identically from a thermal standpoint. The decision between faced and unfaced is about moisture management, not about which one keeps your home warmer.

For Georgia homes, the U.S. Department of Energy generally recommends:

  • Attics: R-38 to R-60 depending on existing insulation
  • Exterior walls: R-13 to R-15 for standard 2×4 framing
  • Crawl spaces and floors: R-13 to R-19
